The lambs are so cute!!!

You know what made me push harder on the gas pedal this morning? Farmville. I was laa dee daaing my way to work when I suddenly remembered! Squash! Eggplant! Wheat! FARMVILLE! I NEED TO CHECK MY CROPS!

I have:
1) 2 awesome sisters that I talk to and get along with and love. We go out to dinner or goof around and if we are too far apart to do that we goof around on the phone. I can totally call these people crying and they still love me.
2) A cousin who keeps wanting to MAKE ME DINNER every week. She does magical things with chicken and cheese.
3) A roommate who is willing to mop the floors, hang out with my cat, and pay bills on time. He also likes magnets a lot. Bonus points.
4) A job that still wants me even though I keep getting sick.
5) Totally rad friends who think I'm totally rad too.

BUT! FARMVILLE is what I'm excited about right now. Go figure.

Is it over yet?

Can we go back to neglecting this blog yet?

In all honesty, I really had fun doing this whole whirlwind of a month even though I didn't contribute half as much as I should have.
We're pretty fucking cool people, as if we didn't already know that.

But seriously, that was a lot of pressure.
And I tried to keep the comments running but I guess that's more of a facebook type thing.

Sooooo... I love y'all very much!
Goodnight!

what i've learned over the past week

1) A bad egg will float.
2) When invited to a potluck, I have a tendency to bring way too much food.
3) There were these things called sea scorpions (Pterygotus) that lived during the Silurian Period. In some cases they were longer than a man.
4) The earth is estimated to be about 4.6 billion years old. I know I've heard this multiple times before, but it really stuck in my head this time.
5) I find all "women's" magazines to be dull and, in most cases, at least slightly offensive.
6) It's possible to build up a tolerance to cough syrup with codeine.
7) I want a pet pig.
8) I could totally knit these. And they're cute. And I bought the patterns.

S is for Mandarin Orange PeelS

This randomly and accidentally happens to me sometimes when I'm eating Cuties.
I buy them, like, 40 at a time and whether I'm at school, the office, or at home with Kyte I always try to peel them in a spiral.
It only occasionally works out and then of those occasions only a few end up being around cell phones and/or cameras.
These are some S's for Sarah.
They NEVER end up shaped like R's.

p.s. I am seriously finished trying to figure out the goddamn formatting here.
I erase, I try again, I use the space bar a million times. I give up.
So they're way over there to the right, whatever.

My name and food

Ss
S is for sauerkraut. I have never eaten that crap. It scares me. Is it good? S is also for sushi, which I do like. S is the first letter of the word sick, which I am and have been for 4 days already. Is it starve a fever and feed a cold or feed a fever and starve a cold? Either way, there will be sweet potato casserole. S is also for spill. Oops.

Aa
A is for asparagus, which I like to roast in the oven w/ olive oil and pepper. A is also for ass-hat. An ass-hat is a person who ruins asparagus with hollandaise sauce.

Rr
R is for......eh.......well, I could say red anything (red grapes, red velvet cupcakes), but that's a cop out. Uh, R is for RELISH! Relish is good in tuna salad. That's about it. R is also for ratatouille, which I made a few months ago and didn't like because eggplant has a spongy texture that grosses me out. It was a bitch to make, though. I had to slice lengthwise and layer and baste. All for something that sat in the fridge for a few weeks before getting thrown out. Bleck.

Aa
A again. Hi A! A is for Aero, which is another chocolate bar Cindy sent to me. The inside was minty and air bubbly.

Hh
H is for hummus. H is also for honey, which I just learned has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. I'm going to go try that out for myself.

Blogger Burnout

Let loose with Snowball and some amazing dolphins.

Kyte

These are the only pictures I have of Kyte as a puppy.

Her eyes are kinda scary. Too real. Too human.
Now that her head is bigger they don't stand out as much.

She was psychotic.
It's easy to forget how bad it was now that she's old and more mellow.

Here's a more recent picture of her.

She's my hunny. My baby girl. My hunny babe.

Day 2fucking4

Dear blog,

This time next week, I'm going to need a break. I'm letting you know now so that you can prepare yourself. It just seems like nothing I do is good enough for you. I give and I give and you just want more and more. Every day there's a blank New Post box staring at me and when I can't come up with something creative enough for you, I just feel bad about myself. I don't need this in my life right now. I don't need you! I've got Cheratussin to get me through the night, and that's good enough for me. I hope we can be civil to each other over the next week. After that, I'm going to need some time to reevaluate our situation and see if I'm comfortable giving this another try. I at least need some ME time, you know?

Peace out,
Sa

tossing my content worries to the wind

I don't really have anything interesting to say. I am giving you some of my favorite YouTube videos and my favorite sections of them. Some of them can't be embedded.
I am eating the Smarties that Cindy sent to me from London. They look like Sprees and taste like M&Ms.

from a poem by Tony Hoagland

Happiness, Joe says, is a wild red flower
plucked from a river of lava
and held aloft on a tightrope
strung between two scrawny trees
above a canyon
in a manic-depressive windstorm.

Don't drop it, Don't drop it, Don't drop it-,

And when you do, you will keep looking for it
everywhere, for years,
while right behind you,
the footprints you are leaving

will look like notes
of a crazy song.

Farewell My Fugly Funk

I'm beginning to understand why blogging would be difficult. What if you have a 90% shitty week, with the non-shitty 10% taking place early on in the week? Seems like you have 3 choices: (1) shut the f up until your mood is no longer rotten like a jack-o-lantern on Thanksgiving, (2) fake happy, the idea of which is so repulsive my mood has now gotten worse, or (3) invite everyone into your shitty pity party which is annoying and quite boring. So, no 1, 2, or 3 for me. Instead, let's have a farewell party for my funk. For he's NOT a jolly good fellow, which nobody can deny.

Acceptance: This week was bullshit.

Understanding: There are ways I've contributed to the funk which are not helpful and should not continue. I'm hoping to Sweet Baby Jesus that there are some serious hormonal fluctuations going on for me to blame the funktitude on. Otherwise, I can carpe the unfunktitude and...

Moving On: Do the things that you know will keep the funk at bay, find new things that might keep the funk at bay, don't do things that bring on the funk, don't feel guilty about the last one.

Things to look forward to: Rain is coming and will be a nice change, weekend!, cooking, getting out on the trail, making ornaments, getting stuff done, maybe seeing New Moon or some other movie, sleeping in, 2-day work week next week!!!

Ok, now I'm beginning to understand why blogging is awesome when you're in a funk. Fuck you funk, fuck you very much. Thanks blog. Goodnight.

Accidental Treasures

I kept coming across short clips of accidental footage while I was sifting through my files of photos and videos looking for something sweet and simple to post here.
Miscellaneous locations, times, people, moments I may not have even remembered if I hadn't accidentally recorded those few seconds.
Soooo, without further ado, I give you Accidental Treasures.
Enjoy.

I Feel Like I've Been Really Lazy, But...

1. Woke up and drank coffee.

2. Made grocery list based on my intention to cook the following:

  • Lynn's Roasted Veggie and 2 Bean Chili
  • Corn Bread
  • Curried Potato Salad
  • Christmas Soup (it's a butternut squash/carrot/kale soup I made a lot last winter that I named "Christmas Soup")
  • Hearty Lentil Spaghetti Sauce

3. Went to Hobby Lobby to get supplied for ornaments I'm making as gifts. Saw 2 young strapping HL employee lads apprehend a shoplifter.

4. Went to Newflower Farmer's Market to get some of my groceries. I like to support this little store and sometimes they have good deals.

5. Came home to drop off those groceries.

6. Went to HEB for the rest of my groceries.

7. Jammed 2 Ani CDs (Reckoning and LPC) and a Ray LaMontagne CD (Til the Sun Turns Black) while cooking all of the aforementioned foodstuffs except for the Hearty Lentil Spaghetti Sauce which I am too tired to do today and will do tomorrow or Monday).

8. Portioned, cleaned, did dishes.

9. Forgot to mention that I've done about 4 loads of laundry & folded and put away that laundry throughout the day.

10. Read blogs, comment on our blog.

11. I've only eaten carbs today: luna bar (chocolate peppermint), luna cookie (tiny), 2 cornbread muffins, 2 coconut milk ice cream sandwiches which are so tiny and cute and yummy.

12. I have no desire to eat anything else. Something is off with my appetite.

13. I'm still going. More portioning, cleaning, dishes, laundry, folding and putting away to come.

14. I'm about to lose myself in more Twilight in a bit.

15. Now I feel less lazy. I think if I'd exercised, I'd see this day as extremely productive. I need to give myself more credit dammit.

16. I am so happy that I'll have pre-made meals all week. It will give me more time to read Twilight. I need help.

17. I'm going to go drink a lot of water. Maybe that's why my appetite is off?

18. Bye.

Hold please while I enter the twilight zone

The day has finally come. My friend Jessica lent me the first book of the Twilight series back in the summer but I had yet to read it until this past week. I knew from my Harry Potter experience that once I got into the books, they would consume my life until I was done with them. I was right. I have barely slept this week. I think my eyes are sore if that's possible? These books are like crack.

Rachel is a vet tech student.

This is Charcey the horse.
She's 29 and has no teeth.
She eats horse pellet mush twice a day and I get to feed her and brush her and pick her hooves and spray her with fly spray and love her on Thursday evenings.

This a photo of Charcey and her friends Bonnie, the goat, and Alvin and Theodore, the sheep.

Goats and sheep eat primarily hay with a scoop or two of oats and Charcey used to eat hay, when she had teeth, but now she just gums it up into a wad and lets it fall out of her mouth. This makes me sad.

I will buy her horsey dentures when I become rich.

This is Moomoo and he is a fucking freak.

I like to hold him in one hand while I play on one of the computers in the vet tech lab with the other hand.

What? You don't get to surf the internet at school while cuddling kittens? Aww, you must not be a vet tech student

Their momma was feral and was rescued by a shelter and then adopted by the program.
She's FIV positive so the kittens had to be taken away early.
They need lots of love and, ahem, taming.

So, that's just a short jaunt through the cuter parts of my new academic life.

I'm thinking I might get this for my new tramp stamp:

- Type in your answer to each question.

- Choose a picture from the first three pages.

- Use this website to make your collage: http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/mosaic.php

- Save the image for use in this note.

- Post!

1. What is your name? Rachel

2. What is one of your favorite foods? Cashews

3. What is your hometown? Harlingen

4. What is your favorite color? Purple (typed in teal)

5. What is your favorite movie? I could watch Zelig a few times a day.

6. What is your favorite drink? Lately I've been enjoying taro pearl milk tea.

7. What is your dream vacation? Key words: stress-free, well-financed, good company, and beautiful scenery.

8. What is your favorite dessert? Um, I was unfortunately introduced to an exquisitely prepared creme brulee on my 28th birthday and, um, yeah, wow, there is no going back. Pineapple upside-down cake is pretty amazing too.

9. What is one word that describes you? Awkward

10. What are you feeling right now? Caffeinated and relieved because I just finished a midterm and feel okay about it and then lab was canceled. I'm also hungry.

11. What do you love most? I am best able to show love most to my dog, Kyte. I love her very much. I love my family the most.

12. What do you want to be when you grow up? Happy

Fuck

I want to formally announce that I do not feel uncomfortable about cussing in this blog. And neither should you. Or you.

Also, is anyone else a little sick of the polka dots?

I need a drink, and a distraction…

I’m at work, so the drinking would be ill advised. Distraction time!!!

1. What time did you get up this morning? 6:50 AM

2. How do you like your steak? medium or medium well. However, my intestines and I don’t really dig beef these days.

3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? Men Who Stare at Goats (sucked).

4. What is your favorite TV show? No Reservations with Anthony Bordain.

5. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? Probably a beach town, but not a tropical one. Or a town on some large body of water. A place where I had a community of people that I loved and loved me. That last point is really more important to me than the location.

7. What is your favorite cuisine? Asian.

8. What foods do you dislike? Watermelon (texture), milk, chocolate cake that doesn’t taste like chocolate (seriously, think about it), fried stuff, other dairy (love the taste, hate what it does to my body), eggplant, things overly spiced with nutmeg or cloves, raw bell peppers, white chocolate, macadamia nuts (texture), bacon, white bread, juicy juice, rubbery green beans.

9. Favorite Place to Eat? Out: Magnolia. At my house: on the futon w/ my stuff on the coffee table w/ the TV on. Misc: anywhere comfortable environment with people that I am comfortable with.

10. Favorite dressing? I love ranch even though I no longer use or buy it. For health purposes, it’s just not good enough to justify the fat and calories. I thoroughly enjoy central market organic balsamic vinegar.

11.What kind of vehicle do you drive? The fit.

12. What are your favorite clothes? Ones that I choose for myself, in a style that I like, that make me feel confident. Ruffles or other cute details on shirts are fun.

13. Where would you visit if you had the chance? I want to go to the bay area. Stargazing and aquariums and bowling, oh my! I also want to go to Greece, South America, and a tropical island some day. Oh, and Alaska and I should see Chicago. New Zealand too. Italian countryside anyone? Spain, Portugal, wherever they filmed Il Postino.

14. Cup 1/2 empty or 1/2 full? Realistically half full.

15. Where would you want to retire? I want to be retired in many many different places. I want to retire in an Air Stream trailer, on boats, in teepees, in villas. I want to explore.

16. Favorite time of day? Mid morning.

17. Where were you born? Harlingizzle in the RGVizzle

18. What is your favorite sport to watch? Baseball – thank you V-Ray for explaining pitching. It all makes sense if you get pitching.

19. Who do you think will not tag you back? N/A

20. Person you expect to tag you back first? N/A

21. Who are you most curious about their responses to this? I really enjoyed reading Sarah’s responses. I don’t ask her enough about herself. She’s an intriguing gal.

22. Bird watcher? What? Seriously? I do love when lots of birds are perched on telephone wires. Anytime I see that it makes me happy.

23. Are you a morning person or a night person? Morning fo sho. Night sometimes makes me sad. Turning out the lights especially. Never fails, I always get slightly depressed for about 2.5 seconds when I turn out lights for the night.

24. Do you have any pets? That kind of long-term responsibility and commitment makes me anxious at this point.

25. Any new and exciting news you'd like to share? I am in week 8 of my couch-to-5k training program and will be jogging 28 minutes non-stop this week! So fun and so didn’t believe I’d ever get this far!

26. What did you want to be when you were young? A dentist, a fashion designer, a doctor, a lawyer. I’m still young and my dream job would be owning my own business – a coffee shop, bar, diner, antique store, boutique, jewelry shop, something like that – a place with a loyal customer base so I’d get to know the customers well, where the staff are all close and I’m busy but have total creative freedom.

27. What is your best childhood memory? Helping Mom bake, the few times Dad came to the Elks Club and threw us around the pool, waking up early on Thanksgiving and helping Mom make cornbread stuffing and watching the Macy’s parade on TV, decorating the glass front door with artwork from school, carving pumpkins, when cold fronts would come in, dancing in the rain on the driveway, stringing popcorn and listening to Christmas music, when Rachel would let me in her room to paint, scavenger hunts with Sarah, freeplay, school supplies shopping at Winn’s, any and everything about Christmas trees, laying on the couch in front of the fireplace with Callie, watching Nick at Night, picking the little pods off of the basil plants and throwing them around like confetti while listening to the cassette tape of the Cats music, Christmas light looking as the Roaches played.

28. Are you a cat or dog person? I like them equally. I’m sad that being a single female owning multiple cats has a stigma attached to it. I’m also sad that I’m not a better animal caretaker. I love other people’s pets.

29. Are you married? In my dreams, to a dynamic and kind fellow.

30. Always wear your seat belt? Always.

31. Been in a car accident? Yes.

32. Any pet peeves? When people’s response to a question is “don’t worry about it.” When people don’t let you know they are cancelling something and lie or make excuses instead of being honest; when people hide things from me; constant complaining or negativity; when i forget my manners; when people take and take and never give back in any way. These are more intense than your normal pet peeve.

33. Favorite Pizza Toppings? Pineapple and pepperoni. I miss pizza sometimes. It’s so delicious.

34. Favorite FlowerS? Magnolias, hydrangeas, wildflowers.

35. Favorite ice cream? Blue Bell peppermint will always be a fond memory. These days, it’s froyo, and even that will jack me up a little.

36. Favorite fast food restaurant? I stopped doing the fast food for the most part a few years ago. Quick food restaurant faves are subway, thundercloud, zen, & baby green’s.

37. How many times did you fail your driver's test? Zero. I was on top of that shiz. Permit at 14 or something ridiculous? Rachel took me to get my license ON my 16th birthday. Getting that car and the freedom to transport myself was such a relief as mom was too stoned to be relied on and I was constantly guilty for making Katie take me everywhere.

38. From whom did you get your last email? The account manager @ my insurance broker. Fun times.

39. Which store would you choose to max out your credit card? This goes against every fiber of my being. But I’ll use Sarah’s scenario and say that on someone else’s dime, I would drop it like it’s hot at Anthropologie.

40. Do anything spontaneous lately? Yesterday, I had already decided I wasn’t exercising, but I got up and went on a whim. Then after I’d walked for a while, I went and did stairs in front of the Main Building. I felt the burn. Not super crazy, but not planned.

41. Like your job? I don’t feel confident in my abilities yet and sometimes get lazy and down on myself, but overall, yes. Love where I work and who I work for. I like to be very good at whatever I do, or at least feel that I totally understand all facets of it. Not there yet. Meh. I still like it.

42. What's your favorite vegetable? Ok, this favorite shit is starting to piss me off too. Which is why I balk at the choose a favorite concept and give you another list: Brussels sprouts, asparagus, any and all squash (which might not really be veggies?), spinach, bok choy.

43. What was your favorite vacation? First time in Seattle.

44. Last person you went out to dinner with? Chris.

45. What are you listening to right now? Miss Mary’s radio, sounds from the stairwell, people’s pocket stuffs jingling as they walk down the hall.

46. What is your favorite color? Fuck off – light shades of green, aqua, dark yellow and orange, browns and grays.

47. How many tattoos do you have? None. I want a black and white palm tree, and some text of some sort. I still like the idea of us 3 getting matching-ish ones.

48. How many are you tagging for this quiz? N/A

49. What time did you finish this quiz? I finished this question at 1:06PM.

50. Coffee Drinker? Emphatic yes. I remember vividly this one time I was hangin with Sarah when she lived @ NG still. She took me to a coffee shop (it changed names so many times, but @ one point it was Peet’s?) and I took a sip of her coffee and was grossed out. She just couldn’t understand how I thought coffee tasted like liquid cigarettes. Now, I love it and like the nutty roasted flavors the best. I really love the culture of coffee – well, drinks shared as a lifestyle really. Wine, beer, coffee, tea. Every culture has a drink and a way they drink it, and it’s a comforting, enjoyable thing.

Day 11: This bores you more than it bores me.

DIRECTIONS:

- Go to Google image search.

7. What is your dream vacation? 2 month long road trip

8. What is your favorite dessert? TCBY

Day 10

I feel creative during the day while I'm at work but when I get home I don't want to turn on my computer. I would be able to do fun posts at work if I had a camera and a scanner here, but I don't.

So, I'm doing one of these "getting to know you" things that was spreading through Facebook a while back. I am copying and pasting the one Rachel did in July. There are 50 fucking questions.

1. What time did you get up this morning? 9:10AM

2. How do you like your steak? When I ate steak, I liked it well done. I would try to order it well done in restaurants and Mom would wave frantically at the waiters and tell them to make it medium well. She didn't believe that I liked chewy steak.
I now like my steak to be connected to the rest of the cow, thank you.

3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? Cinema? Where Them Wild Things Is At.

4. What is your favorite TV show? I don't have a favorite one. I always get excited about Antiques Roadshow and I'll probably be able to watch Firefly a million more times. Malcolm in the Middle is fun to watch when I can't sleep. Buffy and Angel both have a special place in my heart.

5. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? An old city with narrow streets, fruit stands, fountains, balconies, parks, rooftop gardens, and only a few tourists. I want to know everyone and walk everywhere and never get bored.

7. What is your favorite cuisine? The favorite questions are messing me up. Why do I have to have a favorite? I rebel against this question. I like mexican food, thai food, greek food, sushi, and anything Emily and Grandma make.

8. What foods do you dislike? Rachel, why don't you like marzipan? I dislike celery, anything with coconut milk, anything that would be better with cheese but doesn't have cheese (I can't get past the lack of cheese and this keeps me from enjoying the food), and big chunks of hot cooked tomato. Bleck.

9. Favorite Place to Eat? Blurg. Another favorite question. I can see now that I might have made a mistake.
I like to eat crosslegged in front of the TV (don't judge me), at restaurants, and at my dining table when there is a Chronicle, magazine, or half-completed (by Rene) crossword to look at.

10. Favorite dressing? This stuff.

11.What kind of vehicle do you drive? 2004 Honda CRV. You know me so well now.

12. What are your favorite clothes? Ones that don't ask me stupid questions.

13. Where would you visit if you had the chance? The next place I want to visit is New York City.

14. Cup 1/2 empty or 1/2 full? It depends on the situation and the day. And the drink.

15. Where would you want to retire? See my answer to question number 5.

16. Favorite time of day? 10 or 11AMish. And lunch time. And go home time.

17. Where were you born? Fort Worth, TX.

18. What is your favorite sport to watch? I usually don't enjoy watching sports. If there is cotton candy involved, I could try to enjoy baseball.

19. Who do you think will not tag you back? N/A

20. Person you expect to tag you back first? N/A

21. Who are you most curious about their responses to this? Who did you learn grammar from?
It might be fun for Rebekah to answer these questions. Rebakah, did you do this on Facebook? I didn't look.

22. Bird watcher? When I didn't work and didn't care about going to class. And when Rachel was available to drive around waste water treatment plants with me.

23. Are you a morning person or a night person? I can be both. I have a feeling that today (tonight?) I will be a night person.

24. Do you have any pets? I have my very own Flynn.

25. Any new and exciting news you'd like to share? Ha.

26. What did you want to be when you were young? A mom, a marine biologist, and an architect. I also thought about being an author. I also wanted horses to fit in somehow.

27. What is your best childhood memory? "watering the plants in the backyard on virginia pine and being read to by my dad at bedtime." - that's Rachel's answer. That's a good answer and I think that's true for me too. Also, going to Margaret, Anna, and Uncle Lynn's house. EVERYthing about that was awesome (cranberry juice boxes, corn fields, new potatoes, margaritas, the candy bowl, fireworks, burning trash in the backyard, dandelions, sunsets, barrels of monkeys, mint milano cookies, Lynn's screened-in porch with his crazy old exercise machine, the play house they had BUILT for us, and on and on). They were wonderful people with a lot of love to give. It would have been wonderful if they had been allowed to stay in our lives.

Day 8

My good friend Sara bought me a present at this store while she was visiting her sister in Virginia. The box says it is a piece of cavansite. I eventually found a website with information on the use/meaning of cavansite and this is what it said:
Cavansite brings a joyful, optimistic energy to one’s emotional body. Stimulating to the endocrine system. Can be used to help counter stress-induced illness.

Well hell yeah!

I know the pictures I took aren't very good, so here is a better one.

I love my present!

I dreamt me some strange dreams.

Last night I had two dreams that I can remember and that are worth mentioning.

1st) We're (the country/world) under attack and the whole family, us girls, are all in a house together.
A huge bomb explodes about 10 miles away.
There's a window facing the direction of the explosion and everyone can see the smoke rising.
We decide that we'll need our energy if we're going to flee and everyone lays down to take a nap.
I wake up (in the dream) and flip out because we've wasted a whole lot of time.

2nd) I have a shoe box containing a live snake, a live tarantula, a live toad and a live baby bird. They're all squished in one corner of the box like play-dough and the tarantula has injured a leg but seeing as how tarantulas molt I'm convinced that he will ultimately be okay.
I understand the extremely urgent need to get to some place where all these animals can be separated and put into proper environments.
All of a sudden I'm on a cruise ship.
This makes me very irritated and impatient.
I'm running around with this shoe box, the tarantula's leg is fucked up, the toad is shrinking and the bird keeps turning into a human baby.

If anyone can shed some light as to what either of these dreams mean I'd be happy to hear your opinions. Seems to me that it's mostly time management/juggling issues.

What? Your elephant figurines don't sing to you in the shower?

the gooberific things i do when i'm alone - for your viewing pleasure.

Day 5: Give me SOME credit

This morning before I left the house I forgot to:
-brush my teeth
-feed Flynn
-get some type of receptacle for drinking water and/or coffee at work

I now:
-am afraid to talk to anyone
-keep worrying that some article of clothing/bedding/area of carpet will have been ripped to shreds or peed on when I get home
-have resorted to drinking Cherry Coke

I took a shower, though. And I have pants on. And my shoes are tied.

Day 4

I've been feeling silly and slightly embarrassed today because I've had this song stuck in my head.

Lovely weather for a fresh red coat

DSC01627

They repainted the red door, which is the front door of the Main Building. It had faded with all the sunshine and I was really excited that they repainted it because it’s such a beautiful door. Here is some fun info about red front doors:

  • In Feng Shui a red front door means “welcome.”
  • In early American tradition, if a family had a red front door tired travelers traveling by horse and buggy would know that a home was a welcoming place to rest and that they would be able to spend the night there.
  • In Biblical times, red doors indicated protection. This stemmed from the story of the Hebrew slaves who were instructed to smear blood of a lamb on their front doors to protect their first born from the angel of death.
  • In old Catholicism churches painted the doors of the church red to represent the blood of Christ. Passing through the door would mean that you were on holy ground.
  • Some believe a red door protects the occupants from evil.
  • In Scotland, homeowners would paint their front door red to signify that they had paid off their mortgage.
